Jean-Noël Lemoal

Jean-Noël is a colour King. I've never, ever seen him colour outside of the lines.

He worked on the project from it's initial conception at Ellipse in France, all the way to the end as Head of colour. He has a wonderful colour-sense, and he is a master of light.

In the graphic simplification and stylization of the series, there was a realism that was spot-on, which completed the look. Our ambition was to broaden the dynamic spectrum from the typical approaches of cartoon series at the time. No rainbows and pastel palettes please. We wanted black blacks, and they weren't to be seen in animation for television. There was some kind of myth that black gave the impression that there was a hole in the television screen. So Ming in a black suit, shoes, and a black cape, once he was coloured - was this graphic, stylized silhouette. Bobs legs when crossing over each other in movement, had no outlines or reflections. Just graphic shapes given meaning by movement.

It was really fun to push the boundaries with him.
